Growing up in Va. Beach, Va, Barbara Rush was a very shy child. She found comfort and the freedom to express herself through her art and has been an artist most of her life. After a hiatus of many years she was perusing art at the High Museum (in Atlanta 2005) and had the opportunity to view a few cubist paintings up close. She was fascinated by their use of line and form and became instantly obsessed with putting the form of the horse into the context of a similar style.
“Since I have been drawing and riding horses since Girl Scout camp, when I was introduced to horses at the age of 12, it was a natural subject matter for me to explore new territory with, so I began playing with geometric shapes within the body of the horse.” ~ Barbara Rush
In November 2006, she completed three giant red paintings, which were the first in the geocubist series entitled, “The Tao of Equus,” which translates to The Way of the Horse.
Many people describe her work as having a modern cubist or geometric style. They are excited to see horses portrayed in such a different manner. Barbara typically finds an image of a horse that “speaks” to her. Then she draws it…maybe enhancing some direction or flow of its movement. She looks at how the horse’s muscles are moving and the pace it is going and decides on how to deconstruct the body into shapes that are relevant to its motion. After she has the drawing down, Barbara works on the color combination on paper until she finds one that resonates. She then layers in the background, tweaking the lines as she goes.
“Many people think that I mask off the hard edges in my paintings in order to get the lines straight. In reality the lines are all just as straight as my hand allows. I believe that it helps that I once worked as a sign painter who did hand lettering before vinyl became all the rage.” ~ Barbara Rush
Barbara Rush was the 2008 recipient of the “Spirit of the Show” award at the Alpharetta Streetfest and is the co-owner of Synergy Fine Art, in Historic Roswell, just north of Atlanta. She runs Equine Art Shows and a variety of other art-related projects.
